We have enjoyed three sailing trips aboard a
catamaran in the
Windward Islands including the Grenadines. We hope you enjoy some of our
favorite stops.
We began our winter sailing trip in Grenada and our first stop was
St. George's. Grenada is a beautiful island with lush green
mountains, crystal waterfalls, golden beaches and the fragrant spice
trees that give the island its nick name, the Spice Island.
We made a very nice mid-morning stop at Sandy
Island, just off the west coast of Carriacou. Diving and
snorkeling are great on the reefs on the north end. Pelicans and
seagulls are the only inhabitants.
One night we anchored in Chatham Bay on the lee side of
Union Island. It is a large protected anchorage with a long beach
to explore. There is good snorkeling around the rocks off Rapid
Point. The fish life is rich and attracts all kinds of birds.
Meet James, also known as Shark Attack. He does barbecues on
the beach with fish, lobster and local vegetables. He will also
come by your boat and take your order for lobsters. He will clean
and partially cook them, and bring them back to your boat to finish
on the grill for dinner. What a treat!!
We stopped in the bustling town of Clifton (Union Is.) to
clear customs. There's a good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables
from stands along the main street and the local market. And check
out Captain Gourmet for wines and other great finds. They
provision for charters. There are several restaurants and
boutiques. And Union is now the jump-up center of the Grenadines.
This was the breath-taking view from our deck when
we anchored in Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau. It was so beautiful we
took picture after picture. You can get breakfast, lunch or dinner
from the local club there. This is one stop not to be missed.
The Tobago Cays are a group of small deserted islands
protected by Horseshoe Reef. There are small sand beaches and
clear water. It is a National Park so no fishing, jet skis or
water skis. Boat venders do hang out here. If you need
anything ask for Walter or Rondell. Take care of speeding dinghies
when in the water.
Mustique is a privately owned island developed as a
holiday haven for the wealthy. There are nature trails and miles
of unspoiled beaches. Also several boutiques, market, bakery,
coffee shop, restaurants, bars, and a fish market in the fishing
village. Basil's has a Wednesday night barbecue buffet.
Moorings are mandatory.
Bequia is a favorite stop for sailors, isolated enough to
be unspoiled, yet lively and entertaining. There are super
markets and a new fruit and vegetable market for provisioning.
Shop for local handicrafts or model boats. Island tours are
worthwhile. Don't miss the ice cream shop. BBQ Thursday
nights at Frangipani.
